The Ivor Novello Awards were first introduced in 1955 and they are awarded for songwriting and composing. They are nicknamed, "The Ivors" and take place each May and are sponsored by the Performing Right Society.
They are respected worldwide as the major platform for recognising and rewarding Britain's songwriters and composing talents, indeed they are the only such awards i.e. to honour writers rather than artists although inevitably these lines are blurred as many artists write their own songs. The Award itself is a solid bronze sculpture of Euterpe - the Greek muse of music
With over 1000 statuettes have been awarded since 1955!!
They are named after Ivor Novello (January 15, 1893 – March 6, 1951), a Welsh composer, singer and actor who became one of the most popular British entertainers of the early 20th century.
