Gomez Band Picture

Gomez is a very under-rated band (in my humble opinion) as the chart positions listed below will testify. These videos are four of what I think is the better of the Gomez tracks that they released as singles. People who know the band's work (fans especially) may disagree with my choices.............

  1. 78 Stone Wobble April 6, UK Chart position #44
  2. Whippin' Piccadilly , UK Chart position September 7, 1998 # 35
  3. Get Myself Arrested June 8, UK Chart position #45
  4. Rhythm And Blues Alibi September 6, 1999, UK Chart position #18

Interestingly that's four of the first five singles that Gomez released, with the missing one being released in between Whippin' Piccadilly and Rhythm And Blues Alibi which was, "Bring It On" released July 5, 1999, UK Chart position #21.

Also, three of the songs are from their debut album, "Bring It On". With every song on Gomez's debut album being extremely palatable, it received rave reviews from the outset and from both sides of the Atlantic !! However, sales for, "Bring It On" in the UK never really took off until it won the much acclaimed 1998 Mercury Music Prize for best album.

In doing so beating off stiff competition from, "Mezzanine" by Massive Attack, who were the favourites and perhaps what I thought more controversially, "Urban Hymns" which is now considered almost a classic, which of course is by Richard Ashcroft's band, The Verve.

"Get Myself Arrested" and "Whippin' Piccadilly" were later released as singles. The track listing for, "Bring It On" is as follows:

  1. Bring It On, Gomez Album Cover"Get Miles" – 5:15
  2. • "Whippin' Piccadilly" – 3:12
  3. • "Make No Sound" – 3:26
  4. • "78 Stone Wobble" – 4:22
  5. • "Tijuana Lady" – 7:08
  6. • "Here Comes the Breeze" – 5:29
  7. • "Love Is Better Than a Warm Trombone" – 3:29
  8. • "Get Myself Arrested" – 4:03
  9. • "Free To Run" – 4:31
  10. • "Bubble Gum Years" – 3:20
  11. • "Rie's Wagon" – 9:07
  12. • "The Comeback" – 0:44

Gomez consists of four friends from Southport , these are,

  1. Guitarist and vocalist Ian Ball and
  2. Drummer Olly Peacock
  3. Guitarist / vocalist / keyboardist Tom Gray
  4. Bassist Paul Blackburn.

Ian Ball met Ben Ottewell when they were both studying at Sheffield University. The band played their first gig together in late 1996 in Leeds without a formal name. The band left a sign out for a friend of theirs whose surname was Gomez to indicate that it was the site of their first gig. People saw the sign and assumed that the band's name was Gomez, and sp Gomez was born!!

The band started recording four-track demos in a garage in Southport soon after. A bidding war later erupted when they sent the demos to recording labels, with in 1997.the band finally signing with Virgin Records' subsidiary, Hut.

  • The band's second album, Liquid Skin, was released in 1999 lending Gomez further success on the British and Australian album charts, as well as making the Billboard Heatseeker chart for the first time.

  • Secondly a collection of B-sides and rarities, "Abandoned Shopping Trolley Hotline" was released in 2000.

  • Gomez's third album, In Our Gun, was released in 2002. It made the top 10 on the United Kingdom charts as well as the top 50.

  • On the Australian charts. The single "Shot Shot" charted in the UK top 40, the top 20 in Portugal , and the Billboard Heatseeker chart.

  • Fourth album Split the Difference released in May 2004. This album reached the top 40 in the UK and Australia . The first single "Catch Me Up" entered the UK top 40 in March 2004, then "Silence" was released as the second single. Again, "Split the Difference" received a good critical response.

  • And finally, the Fifth album by Gomez, "How We Operate" was released on May 2, 2006. The album's title track was featured in the Grey's Anatomy episode "Deterioration of the Fight or Flight Response."
