The Pipettes - Polka Dot Dresses

The Pipettes are fronted by three ladies and are based in Brighton , England . When people talk of The Pipettes, the conversation usually includes Phil Spector and classic 1960's girl groups such as The Shangri-Las and The Ronettes.

The Pipettes' three leading ladies are Riot Becki, Gwenno and Rosay. This however was not the original line-up. Approximately a year after forming (2003) The Pipettes lost Julia, one of their lead singers and also a founding member.

Julia went on to join, “The Indelicates” who themselves have since received rave reviews and much critical acclaim in the music press. Julia was replaced by Gwenno who had lead vocals on their most commercially successful single to date, the well crafted pop ditty, “Pull Shapes”, the video for, "Pull Shapes" parodies a scene from the Russ Meyer cult classic film, "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls."

The incredibly catchy, “School Uniform” is another crowd pleaser, as is the fantastic finger wagging, “Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me”. The Pipettes always finish their sets with the simple, yet anthem-esque, “We Are The Pipettes.”

Now, if I was a gambling man I would have happily placed money on 2006 being the year of The Pipettes. Especially after their gruelling tour schedule during which their sets were always highly praised and proven crowd pleasers.

Unfortunately this was not to be the case, with their debut album charting at a very disappointing #41, (well it's a very disappointing position after you've heard the album!!) Maybes one of the best kept secrets of indie-pop was just too well kept!!

The Pipettes Trademark Polka Dot DressesThere's definitely no-one else out there at present who sounds or looks remotely like The Pipettes, with their catchy, infectious melodies, exaggerated dance movements, polka dot dresses and wry sense of humour they truly are a pleasure to behold. And The Pipettes can also be placed into a very small yet very distinguished category of artists whose live shows are better than their pre-recorded offerings.

Their live shows brings all of their quirkiness together into one big, glorious spectacle which has –rightfully- earned The Pipettes cult status among those lucky enough to have experienced their live sets first hand. Leading to several critics commenting that The Pipettes put on a better show than some of the bands they were supporting.

The fact that they haven't yet completely conquered the mainstream charts remains one of their many appeals, and there is also an apprehension that they may be seen as just another generic, diluted, bubblegum-pop, “Girl Group” when they are so much more.

But having said that it, surely it's only a matter of time before we start seeing The Pipettes making the obligatory Saturday/Sunday morning appearances as they line up along side the usual suspects of the current British Pop scene. Whether this will be a defining moment in their short careers remains to be seen..............
