Amanda Palmer and Brian Viglione.

Inspired by an era known both for the destruction of World War II and for a wealth of accomplished performers in all branches of the arts, The Dresden Dolls are a rare breed of creative talents dedicated to their craft.

The Dresden Dolls are from Boston, Massachusetts, a two-piece band, formed mid-2000 and comprising of singer & pianist Amanda Palmer and drummer & occasional guitarist and vocalist Brian Viglione. They describe their style as "Brechtian punk cabaret." (The term Brechtian Punk Cabaret for their musical style was invented by Palmer because she did not want the press to label them with as part of a more typifying genre, such as gothic.)

Contrary to popular belief the band members met on the NIGHT BEFORE Halloween, not on Halloween!! They currently have a cult following of die-hard fans who dress much the same as the Dresden Dolls, a sort of killer cabaret harlequins look!! When asked about their outlandish attire,

"We started wearing the stage clothes one night because we played with a burlesque troupe," he continues. "We were like, 'Ha ha! This is funny. What a joke. Let's dress up and kind of get into the spirit of the night.' It wound up being the perfect context for what we did because there's a lot of imagery in the music and we both kind of ham it up and play into that side of it."

The Dresden Dolls positively encourage their loyal fans to become involved at their shows. The name, “The Dresden Dolls“, according to Palmer, was "inspired by a combination of things", including the firebombing of Dresden, Germany and the porcelain dolls which were a hallmark of the Dresden industry; (before the catastrophic air raids of World War II). Also attributed to choosing the band name are; an early song of the same name by The Fall and a reference to the V.C. Andrews novel Flowers in the Attic where the classically blond and blue-eyed protagonists are called "The Dresden dolls."

The name is also inextricably linked to the cabaret culture which was prevalent during Weimar Germany and its. Amanda Palmer also, "liked the parallel between Dresden (destruction) and Dolls (innocence, delicacy), because it is very much in keeping with the dynamics of the music, which sometimes goes from a childlike whisper to a banshee scream within a few seconds."

The Dresden Dolls were featured in a live internet performance at the 2002 Nobel Prize ceremony which was held in Cambridge, Massachusetts .

The Internet Sketch Comedy Show, “Moron Life,” released their parody of Coin Operated Boy entitled Beer Activated Girl to the delight of both Amanda Palmer and Brian Viglione who both have emailed the show and expressed their enthusiasm for the parody.
